In this short meditative practice<\/a>, June Kozak Kane suggests intentions which one can ponder while performing the ritual hand-washing in order to make this act more meaningful. Although the author is specifically referring to the hand-washing upon waking, where one washes each hand alternately three times, these concept can be easily applied to the hand-washing before eating bread, where one washes each hand successively either two or three times, depending on custom.\u00a0This text was originally posted on\u00a0Ritualwell<\/a>, a project of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College that provides a platform for creating new Jewish practices and observances.<\/em><\/p>\n

Nitilat Yadayim Intentions<\/h2>\n

After reciting the nitilat yadayim (hand washing) blessing, visualize the handwashing cup as being filled with blessings\u2026<\/p>\n

Wash each hand front and back three times, alternating from right to left.<\/p>\n

  1. \u00a0While washing\u00a0right hand front and back, think or say: “May all paucity of spirit or negativity be removed from me.” While washing left hand front and back, think or say: “May blessings come to me all day to benefit the world.”<\/li>\n
  2. Second washing-right hand: “May all my dear ones experience a removal of any negativity.” Left hand: “May all my dear ones experience a renewal of blessings.”<\/li>\n
