This descriptive poem<\/a>\u00a0in Hebrew and English by Kaila Shabat<\/a> paints\u00a0a lovely picture of the festive Shavuot celebrations in the moshavim and kibbutzim of Israel. Often secular and deeply connected to the Land of Israel, these communities often focus on agricultural roots of the Festival of the First Fruits, as opposed to the religious significance\u00a0of the receiving of the Torah.\u00a0<\/em>Kaila Shabat, a poet, author and singer who arrived in Israel from London as a volunteer after the Six-Day War, shared her poem on\u00a0Ritualwell<\/a>, a project of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College that provides a platform for creating new Jewish practices and observances.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

they converge on the square.
\nPastel pennants and blue stars
\nflutter above bales of hay
\nthat spell out the word\u00a0Shalom<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Shouldering laden baskets,
\nnymphs perform a demure dance,
\nto blaring seasonal folk songs,
\nfluffy chicks scrabbling at their feet.
\nCalves ride past on trailers and
\nmothers proudly parade new babies.
\nBlue and white balloons,
\nreleased into the cloudless sky,
\ndrift away to Jordan.<\/p>\n

The villagers praise the Provider,
\nnot in the temple but on the land
\nfrom whence springs the Bounty,
\nreveling in its wonders
\nand in the sheer joy of living.<\/p>\n
