The creation of new structural forms in the social sphere will thus be part of a higher movement whose later unfoldment will operate in the religious, mystical, and philosophic spheres. Starting at the birth of Christianity–a religion inextricably bound to Western thought–Miles reveals how we in the West have come to isolate religion as an object of study, and how drastically our perception has changed over time and across societies. Jack Miles packs more insights into 100+ pages than most anyone else I can think of.
